One friend offers support but feels responsible for solving each other's difficulties.
I propose that we recognize the value of friendship along with its boundaries. In the example, accompanying a person to a trusted adult or professional can be a form of presence.
There is no need to promise absolute secrecy in the face of a concrete risk. Listening does not mean becoming a therapist, and asking for further help does not amount to abandoning the relationship: it distributes a responsibility that only one person may not bear.
